Preparing Scouts for a Changing World

Themed ‘Prepared - For a Changing World’, the 2nd World Scout Education Congress gathered Scout leaders from 98 National Scout Organizations from all World Scouting Regions at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland.

From 11-15 May 2017, the Congress provided a platform for over 200 participants working in the areas of Youth Programme and Adults in Scouting to share their experiences, assess Scouting’s relevance and point a common direction for its development.

‘They came together to collaborate on the important task of advancing our work as the world’s leading educational youth movement and it is clear from their action planning that
there is a shared committed throughout the Movement to help young people everywhere prepare for a changing world,’

World Scout Committee Chairperson, Craig Turpie

Throughout the Congress, participants identified the key trends that are impacting the Movement and its members, and proposed ways Scouting can respond globally, nationally and locally to keep the Movement relevant and attractive to young people.

The five key global trends that emerged are

  • the increasing non-formalisation of formal education
  • shifting demographics and an ageing world population
  • migration, mobility and urbanisation
  • the virtual world and the increase in prominence of digital natives
  • globalisation and the emergence of a global culture

‘As the world’s leading educational youth movement, convening the 2nd World Scout Education Congress by WOSM comes to reaffirm the importance that our Movement attaches to connecting our educational method and programmes with the changing trends around us, especially in non-formal education and youth development,’

WOSM Secretary General, Ahmad Alhendawi
