Sri Lankan Scouts engaged in the relief efforts after devastating floods that hit the country earlier this week.

You would have by now received the sad news of the Natural Disaster situation faced by Sri Lanka in the last one week. As at present more than 600,000 people are internally displaced and one-fourth of that number have lost all their belongings and some of them their homes. The worst floods in more than a decade have killed 202 people and 111 persons missing so far. The situation is predicted to get worse as more rains are expected towards the weekend.

The Scouts of Sri Lanka have as always come forward and are at present involved in relief work and the District Commissioners in the affected areas are organising stock collections of dry rations, drinking water supplies, medicines, sanitary napkins and other necessities.

In the same time, Scout relief teams are distributing drinking water bottles other collected stocks to the population. Scouts are also supporting setup of the camps for relocated people and in further in the resettlement process.

In the next stage, they will be to collecting & purchasing cooking utensils and organising distribution once the water subsides and affected families to start rebuilding their lives.

Earlier today, Ahmad Alhendawi WOSM Secretary-General talked via Skype with the Sri Lankan Scout Association relief team to support their great efforts and express solidarity with Sri Lankan Scouts.

"You are not alone, you have the all the Scouts standing with you"- states Ahmad Alhendawi during the call.

To support the efforts of the Sri Lankan Scouts, urgent financial support has been released trough the Messengers of Peace emergency fund.
