My garden, my environment

Scouts across the world are working hard to keep the environment clean and being good citizens of their communities. A Scout troop called “Tadamoun” (which means solidarity) in the Nedroma region of Tlemcen, Algeria is among the 40 million Scouts who are contributing to a sustainable environment.

Saddened by the sight of rubbish strewn around Nedroma, the Scouts decided to take action and keep the town clean. In 2013, they launched the “My garden, my environment” project. Through the project, they identify gardens that need cleaning and make it better than before. The project involves three phases:

Phase 1 – Rubbish is collected and segregated according to type
Phase 2 – Damaged walls and benches are repaired
Phase 3 – Trees are planted and the garden is kept clean

After cleaning up the gardens, they would use them for Scouting and environmental activities.

Once they had a major clean up campaign at the local cemeteries to provide a pleasant environment for community members who pay their respect to their departed loved ones.

As they are also part of the Earth Hour campaign, the Scouts embark on a public awareness campaign on climate change every year.

Since implementing the World Scout Environment Programme (WSEP), they have been carrying out environmental activities regularly, earning many of their members, the World Scout Environment Badge (WSEB).
