Exciting Scouts of the World Project - Palmares un Canton Modelo

It all started in January of 2010 after a process of research, awareness and a rain of knowledge started flowing ideas, to see the needs that were in my community, then a draft which was reviewed and approved was the Association of Guides and Scouts of Costa Rica, contacts and strategic alliances with local government began, canton recyclers, trade and volunteers.
On Saturday February 26, 2011 started the project "Palmares un Canton Modelo" by Tatiana Cuadra and Nazareth Mora, both members of the Scout and Guide group # 21 San Ramon.

The project aimed to recycling campaigns last Saturday of the month in conjunction with the municipality of Palmares and volunteers who give their time to receive, sort, pack, weigh, and assemble the material into a truck for transport to the center collection

At first it was difficult starting with 1,629 kg of recyclable material which brought a little bit of motivation and concern but we went ahead, taking actions such as informing more people, teaching them to be separated, the biologist Martha Jeannina Rojas Rojas charge of the office Scene municipality made visits to schools in order to inform and motivate recycling culture, supported by the press to publicize the project sought to give this resulted in a gradual increase in the collection, the third campaign which would give us great satisfaction to collect 6,226 kg in 8 campaigns at the end of the project we managed to salvage from the trash approximately 23 tons of recoverable materials.

We had very difficult times for example when I got a lot of material but there was little volunteer work was exhausting, once had to go trade for trade asking for donations to get lunch in order to give the volunteers a minimum for his work in the winter had to deal with rain, which could affect the material as we work in an open area. Little by little we give solutions to the problems presented, achieving great success culminating with 8 campaigns at our expense.

On October 8 the official handing of the project to the Municipality of Palmares which was very thankful and commitment to continue the project became, Office of Environment is currently responsible for monitoring and implementing campaigns, gradually in 2012 a partnership between the municipality of Palmares and the Joint Social Welfare Institute was created to work giving a group of female heads which made hours in recycling campaigns and the Joint Social Assistance Institute is responsible giving them a small financial remuneration, likewise as the project goal has been raised to give 10 desks Reciclam (materials made from Tetrabrik) canton schools, which have already benefited result 6 schools, all material tetrabrick is donated to create the desks.

Recently the project was three and a half years running and remains on track, growing more and more, which is a great honor and we are helping our environment and better yet creating awareness in the population to recycle and care for our planet

On the same October 8 handed me the first Scout of the World Award in Central America, which filled me with pride, like my family group and friends who were always always there working with the project and reminded me that this started like a dream, almost unreachable and we should mobilize and convince an entire community to believe in the project, however slowly, step by step and were succeeding campaign at obtaining a great satisfaction.

Currently a part of the project we are working on giving talks to groups on the proper separation of recyclable materials, we are updating the law # 8839 on the Management Plan for Comprehensive Management of Solid Waste and Regulations at Canton, we are promoting and creating the Plan management at the regional headquarters of the Ministry of Health.
Thanks to this long, grueling process at times, but very motivating and rewarding we witness that people have a desire to recycle, they know they must do something for our planet, with small actions we can make big changes, however, it is important further open spaces in order to be creating a consciousness more in harmony with the environment and go together to create a better planet.
