Malawian Scouts Reach out to Visually Impaired Children in Ekwendeni

1 minute

Forty-nine visually impaired children (25 boys and 24 girls) from the CCAP School for the Blind situated at Ekwendeni in the northern Malawi got introduced to Scouting during a visit by some Rover Scouts.

The school, which cares for children living with visual impairment as well as albinism, HIV/AIDS, among other disabilities, is supported by only two teachers. Having noticed the challenges faced by these teachers, including the high teacher-learners ratio and managing children with multiple disabilities, the Rover Scouts decided to introduce Scouting as a way of helping to bridge the gap.

Apart from inducting the children into the movement they also committed to mobilising support for the school to help meet the children’s basis needs of food, clothing, soap, toothpaste and sanitary pads for girls.

Excited about the prospect of getting exposed to new knowledge and experiences the children expressed their interest and willingness to become Scouts.
