Empowering Scouts to Represent the Movement
The World Scout Bureau Africa support Centre conducted a one-day workshop for Scouts drawn from 20 countries to enable them acquire knowledge and skill to accurately, effectively and consistently represent Scouting – under the Young Correspondents and Spokespersons Programme.
As a movement for young people, Scouting continuously endeavours to make young people the face of the movement by providing the knowledge and opportunities. With a grassroots approach, the programme encourages young people to be the carries of their own voices and experiences. Through the Programme, Scouts are empowered to become ambassadors of Scouting in the communities and to make people understand the true value of Scouting.
“We need to share our what we do to with other people to crate a sense of pride in our movement, and to spread the cycle of inspiring greater actions in people. Let us create a cycle of sharing, a cycle of inspiration, a cycle of action to grow our movement and strengthen its profile,’’ said Nelson Opany, Communications & Public Relations Officer at the WSB Africa Support Centre and facilitator of the workshop.
It’s not enough for Scouts to be doing good work in the society, they should be able to tell stories about what they are doing. A big part of the world just knows that scouts exist somewhere and they are supposed to be doing something yet they are not really clear on what contributions scouts are giving in their day today lives.
The Young Correspondents and Spokespersons Programme is an avenue for sharing and inspiration, as well as for supportting regional communication initiatives in order to improve visibility and promotion of Scouting, its values and advocacy work.
