Scouts participate in Tokyo Olympics

If you ever doubted that Scouting builds skills for life, just look to the Scouts who have become Olympians! These athletes are the epitome of resilience, determination and confidence. In Scouting, every individual is encouraged to discover their passions through the Scout Method, supported by their group and taking turns in leadership roles.

We’re proud to see a number of Scouts competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this week. Some of the Scouts who have competed or will compete include:

  • Mayra Aguiar (Brazil): 29-year-old Mayra took home a bronze medal in judo. She is one of the only athletes to win medals in 3 Olympics (London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020).
  • Elena Bertocchi (Italy): 26-year-old Elena is a diver who competed in the synchronized 3-meter springboard final alongside Chiara Pellacani.
  • Keno Marley (Brazil): 21-year-old Keno has advanced to the quarterfinals of the medium heavyweight division (75kg to 81kg) in boxing.
  • Alexa Moreno (Mexico): 26-year-old Alexa is an artistic gymnast competing in her second Olympic Games after taking 12th place in vault at the Rio Olympics.
  • Kieran Bird (United Kingdom): 21-year-old Kieran’s swimming talent was spotted when he helped his local Cub Scout Pack, Oxfordshire Scouting, win a swimming gala in the 2000s. He’s taken part in the 400m and 800m freestyle.
  • Stephanie Norton (Hong Kong): 20-year-old Stephanie is sailing in the laser radial class. She was a Cub Scout (299th East Kowloon Group) and a Scout (192nd Kowloon Group). She is also the first women’s dingy sailor to reach the Olympics via a competitive route since 1996!

We know there must be many more Scouts competing in these Olympics, so if you know of anyone, please leave a comment to let us know.

Sending our biggest congratulations to all Scouts who made it to the Olympics and our best wishes for your success. You are an inspiration to young people everywhere!
