Scouts support humanitarian efforts to reach children, young people and families in war-torn Gaza

2 minutes

Scouts in Palestine are leading critical efforts to support children, young people, and families affected by the war in Gaza, as worsening conditions and limited access to humanitarian aid are threatening to accelerate famine across the territory.

More than one in five people in Gaza, many of them children, face the imminent threat of starvation. In the face of this humanitarian crisis, Palestinian Scouts are braving unimaginable hardships to support others, embodying the values of peace, solidarity, and hope.

Amid critical shortages in life-saving aid, Scouts have organised water distributions and helped establish community kitchens providing thousands of cooked meals to families displaced by nearly three years of intensified conflict. They have led training sessions on hygiene and basic survival skills, teaching people how to build tents and cook over open fires.

Even under the constant threat of conflict, volunteers have continued their work. They have transported wounded people to medical centres, administered first aid, and coordinated emergency response services. Scouts have also led blood donation drives, run psychological support activities for children, and offered counselling to help communities cope with the realities of life in an active war zone.

Beyond emergency aid, Scout programmes have continued to be held in shelters, providing vital spaces for children and young people to play games and take part in activities, offering a much-needed sense of normality and respite. Since October 2023, it is estimated that Scouting initiatives have benefited over 700,000 people in Gaza.

Across the Arab Region, Scouts are also mobilising in response to the crisis. In Jordan, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, Scout groups are working with the local charities to distribute essential goods to displaced families, including tents, mattresses, sheets, and school supplies. Many are also working with charities to raise funds, extending the reach of relief to those most in need.
