A Centenary Gift for Namibia’s President

A hand-carved wooden plaque – a symbolic gift to Namibian President Hage Geingob commemorating the Centenary of Scouting in Namibia – was handed over to newly appointed Vice President Nangolo Mbumba by Scouts of Namibia (SoN) at the Old State House in Windhoek on Feb. 23.
Mbumba received the gift on behalf of the President from a four-person SoN delegation, thus concluding a year of events and activities marking 100 years of Scouting in Namibia (1917-2017).
The delegation briefed Mbumba on SoN’s progress over the past year which included the launch of its Scouting in Schools programme, the revamping of its youth educational programme, the expansion of its Food For Life project, the continuing development of its San People Fruit Tree Project at Tsintsabis, and its phenomenal membership growth all over the country.
The Vice President also was pleased to hear about SoN’s inauguration of a kindergarten and community vegetable garden in Omakange in partnership with Scouts from Scotland, as well as the organisation’s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with SOS Children’s Villages-Namibia to introduce Scouting at SOS’ centres in Windhoek, Tsumeb and Ondangwa.
Scouting is an international non-governmental educational movement for boys and girls of all races, faiths and socio-economic backgrounds, supported by adult volunteers. The aim of Scouting is to contribute to the overall development of young people to enable them to become responsible, self-reliant, service-oriented and peace-minded citizens working toward building a stronger nation and creating a better world.
SoN has approximately 2,500 members in communities around Namibia.
