Scouts in Mexico aid earthquake survivors

On 8 September, Mexico was struck by an 8.1-magnitude earthquake, the strongest to hit the country in a century. The temblor shook the southern coast of Mexico, particularly the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, which are closest to the earthquake's epicentre. At least 98 people have died and thousands forced to flee their homes.

In solidarity with those affected by the earthquake, Scouts in Veracruz decided to initiate a donation campaign. They set up a collection point in a public park where they worked around the clock, collecting and organising canned food, bottled water and milk, bed sheets, mattresses, clothes as well as first aid and medical supplies donated by members of the public.

“The communities here need all the help they can get. What we are doing, collecting essential items and delivering them with the help of local groups, is just a drop in the ocean,” said María Eugenia Rodríguez from Scout Group 11 in Veracruz. Fortunately, last weekend, they were joined by Scouts from Xalapa, Coatzocoalcos and Minatitlán who helped to deliver the much-needed donated items.
