SG50 celebrates Singapore’s 50th birthday; strengthens Scouting ties

“Scout is synonymous with a good deed a day. And we hope that when we go out there we can inspire people around us. All our fellow Singaporeans will continue to do so”, shared by Desmond Chong, Camp Chief of the SG50 Singapore International Jamboree, when interviewed by Channel News Asia.

Singapore Scout Association organised the international jamboree to celebrate Singapore's 50th birthday and to provide a platform to Scouts and Scout leaders from different countries where they can enjoy the exciting and empowering programmes and establishing the Scouting ties.

The five-day jamboree ran from 18-22 November 2015 at the Sarimbun Scout Camp in Lim Chu Kang, where close to 2,500 scouts from 18 countries have gathered including France and United States.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Chief Scout of the Singapore Scout Association hosted a tea reception for delegation leaders and youth representatives on 19 November.

Deputy Prime Minister was at the opening and spoke about how Scouting encourages youth development because of its emphasis on helping other people.

Moreover, acting Education Minister (Schools) Ng Chee Meng also announced the launch of the "One Million Good Deeds" Campaign for 2016.

"This is a manifold increase from the ‘One Thousand Good Acts’ launched last year,” he said. “I am impressed with the ambition and courage of SSA to use their influence for the good of the community. Nothing is too hard for all of us if we put our collective minds to it and go about getting it done."

Highlight of the closing ceremony was the items Scouting for Boys book and badges were placed into a time capsule, which will be buried at the Singapore Scouts' headquarters until 2045.
