Green Skills for Youth: A closing story of growth and community change
As the Green Skills for Youth project comes to a close, Scouts across North Macedonia are reflecting on a journey that has changed far more than their understanding of the environment. It changed the way they see themselves, their communities, and what young people can achieve when someone believes in their potential. None of this would have been possible without the support of partners and donors who helped turn ideas into action.
Everything began in April 2025, in the lakeside city of Ohrid, where 39 young leaders gathered for the “Green Skills Rising” training. For many, it was their first opportunity to learn about environmental issues in a hands-on, practical way. Over three days, they experimented, shared ideas, made mistakes, and gained the confidence to return home and say, “Yes, I can lead something like this.”
Jovana’s experience became a common story. What started as eight planned activities grew into 15 youth-led community projects, involving 480 participants, from families and teachers to neighbours and younger Scouts eager to help. The activities were simple but powerful: planting trees, protecting biodiversity, cleaning rivers, creating eco-trails, and teaching younger children about nature in fun and creative ways.
One of the most memorable moments was the “Avatar – Kisela Voda” eco-trail, where children learned about the natural elements by exploring their neighbourhood, playing games, and sharing stories outdoors. The day ended with a community screening of Avatar. Families sat together, talking about nature, responsibility, and the future, conversations that had not existed there before.
By the end of the project, thousands of trees had been planted, parks and green spaces had been revitalised, waterways were cleaner, and hundreds of Scouts had earned badges recognising their dedication to environmental action. Beyond the visible impact, however, the most profound transformation was in the young people themselves. They discovered their leadership potential, gained confidence, and experienced the powerful reality that their actions can inspire entire communities.
The Green Skills for Youth project may be coming to a close, but the energy it generated continues to ripple outward. With new skills, renewed purpose, and strengthened community ties, these Scouts are ready to continue championing sustainability and shaping a greener, brighter future, proof that your support can spark lasting change.
About the Green Rising Initiative
The Green Rising initiative aims to mobilise 10 million young people worldwide by 2025 – at a grassroots level – to take concrete green actions. By volunteering on environmental issues, advocating for more climate action, or taking jobs in the green economy, they contribute to adapting to the devastating impacts of climate change and protecting their families and communities. That is about young people becoming climate champions.
