Developing Leadership Skills in Young Africans
The fourth edition of the International Leadership Training (ILT) for the Africa Scout Region is being held from 13th to 16th December 2018 in Bujumbura, Burundi. This is the last regional ILT in the first phase of ILT implementation in the region. The previous editions were held in Togo in February 2018, Malawi in June 2018 and Zimbabwe in August 2018.
The main objectives of the ILT training are: to quip the participants with knowledge and skills on leadership, develop the competencies of the participants in project planning, prepare the participants to become better communicators and enhance the achievement of results through better collaborations and team dynamics.
This training has attracted 21 participants aged between 18 to 26 years drawn from 6 NSOs in the East Africa Scout zone namely Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda.
Ayni Aynalem Getie Gismie from Ethiopia says, “the International Leadership Training is an eye opener and an inspiration for me to complete some of the projects I have started through the skills I have learnt in the training. It will also make me improve on my leadership. I have also been able to make new friends and expand my network”.
Another ILT participant, Peter from Uganda had the following to say; “The ILT has helped me to improve on my project management skills in my professional work. I will be able to put these lessons into context when carrying out community programmes such as oral hygiene campaigns. I have really appreciated especially elements to do with project evaluation and measuring impact in relation to the set objectives”.
“You lit candles during the opening ceremony. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle so go out there and light the spirits of thousands of young people with the skills of leadership that you will gain here,’’ said Jonathan Omondi, Director for Scouting Development at World Scout Bureau Africa Support Centre.
In the course of three days, these young people are expected to undergo not only a mind shift but a transformational change in spirit and character as well as learn how to be the best versions of themselves.
The team of facilitators is drawn from the programme alumni from Cote D’Ivoire, DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The course is being directed by Anthony Tukundane from Uganda who is currently serving as a Youth Advisor to the Africa Scout Committee and is one of the pioneers of the ILT in the Region.
