Rovers Centenary 2018

3 minutes

Scouting started in 1907 with what is now known as the Scout section, which was followed by the establishment of the Cub Scout section (Cub Scouts) in 1916. During World War I, the need for a Scouting Programme for young adults arose, leading to the formation of the Rover Scout section in 1918. The term "Rover Scouts" was first mentioned by Baden-Powell in The Boy Scouts Head Quarters Gazette in August 1918.

Baden-Powell wrote a handbook for the new section, Rovering to Success, which was published in 1922. It contained his philosophy for a happy adult life as well as ideas for activities that Rover Scouts could organise for themselves. The Section celebrated its 21st year at the 3rd World Rover Moot in 1939.

Following this brief historical introduction of the Section, we would like to announce the decision to celebrate the Rovers Centenary in 2018 , which was made during the World Scout Committee meeting in March 2017. Therefore, we invite all National Scout Organisations (NSOs) to begin their preparations for an energetic and fantastic celebration of the Centenary throughout next year.

The World Scout Bureau (WSB) is currently collaborating with several NSOs and all WSB Support Centres to produce a global communications plan for the Centenary. We are also working with the World Scout Shop to produce Centenary merchandise.
