First Scout Discovery Centre in Asia-Pacific opens in Singapore

The Singapore Scout Association (SSA) opened the first Scout Discovery Centre in the Asia-Pacific Region on 4th September 2010.

This first Scout Discovery Centre provides both the public and Scouts (locals and overseas) a better understanding of the history and development of Scouting worldwide particularly Scouting in Singapore since it became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1966.

Located within the SSA headquarters, the Centre serves as a resource centre of international and local Scouting. In its exhibit galleries, significant and interesting artifacts that have been collected over the years that preserve the 100 years Scouting tradition and heritage. Some of the items are Scout uniforms, badges, certificates of appointments, warrants, medals and other significant documents of heritage value that are integral part of the nation's growth and development. Many of Singapore's prominent political leaders are former Scouts.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports officiated the opening ceremony and presented Centennial medals to 55 Scouts who made significant contributions, one of them was Mr. Foo Seck Tong, 81 years old retired teacher. When interviewed, he was delighted with the Centre for it brought back the fond memories of his Scouting years.

The Centre is open during the operating hours of SSA and estimated to attract 1,000 visitors on its first three months.
