10 year old Mao, brings online learning to vulnerable children in Mexico

5 minutes

Mao is a 10 year-old Cub Scout from Nuevo León, Mexico. She loves nature, learning new things through Scouting but most importantly she believes that every child should have access to quality education. With the support of her family, Scout Leader and local the authorities, she kicked-off her first crowdfunding campaign determined to help other kids, like her, continue their education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mao, how did you realize that you wanted to solve this issue?

I just finished 5th grade, taking my classes online. I used to borrow my mother’s phone or share my parents’ computer with my siblings to attend our classes. During the summer we moved to my grandparents’ house in a small town and this is when I realized that the kids in this town would face an even bigger challenge finishing school than I did. That’s what sparked the question, how can I help?

That’s a great question Mao, how did you decide what to do next?

My mother is a teacher and she mentioned that many kids are not able to attend their classes or submit their homework because they don’t have the means to do it. After thinking more about it I decided that I wanted to donate tablets with internet packages to 30 children living in vulnerable communities so they can finish the current school year, just like I was able to.

Alfonso Quintanilla, adult leader of Mao’s age section, has being working along with Mao and her parents to deliver the project and impressed that this was Mao’s first project. People grew more interested to help out, and this is how they heard about the Scout Donation Platform and decided to create their own crowdfunding campaign.

Who else is involved in this project?

My parents are helping me spread the word, raise funds with their contacts and collect any tablets that people donate. My grandpa managed to get help from the local authorities to find the most vulnerable families and help us distribute the tablets, and Akela, who is helping me manage the project on the Scout Donation Platform.

What would you tell people around the world to invite them donate to your project?

I would tell them that I’ve seen how children don’t have equal learning opportunities, and it’s not their fault, so let’s work together and make it equal for all of us. It would be really nice if we all help children get the chance to continue their studies. When you donate you will feel very happy because you know you are making a difference in the world and you are also putting a smile on these children’s faces.
