Scouts turning Ulaanbaatar green

Around 500 Scouts in Mongolia reinforced the greenery of Ulaanbaatar city, planting 1,500 trees at the National Garden Park. Mongolian President Mr Eldegdorj Tsahia and Ulaanbaatar City Governor Mr Bat-Uul Erdene joined the Scouts and their parents in the tree planting activity.

WOSM and UNEP collaborated to organize this activity to achieve the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG-7) of promoting national awareness on environmental protection.

During the activity, the workers at the National Garden Park explained about the that tree planting methods and its various benefits: decreasing wind speed and soil erosion, cleansing air and reducing dust and dryness.

One important lesson they have imparted to the Scouts and their parents that “tree planting is just the beginning of the work but the most important part is watering and nourishing the trees.”

After planting the seedlings, each Scout was tasked to take care of three trees and each family is responsible to plant one tree every year.
