Scouting in Myanmar now 100 years old
Myanmar Scout celebrated 100 years of Scouting in the country on 23 December 2016. Scouts and key leaders of Myanmar were joined by Regional Scout Committee member Dr. Pattaroj Kamonrojsiri in a special ceremony.
Republic of the Union of Myanmar State Counsellor, H.E. Aung San Suu Kyi, joined the jubilee celebration at the hall of Yangon University. Aung San Suu Kyi said “The Scout motto is Be Prepared. This means that whatever challenges appear in life, there are many ways to overcome them”.
A preparatory celebration as an opening salvo to the centenary started in November with the participation of Regional Director J. Rizal C. Pangilinan, Regional Scout Committee First Vice-Chairman Atty. Wendel Avisado, Management Sub-Committee Chairman Dr. Somboon Bunyasiri, and Mr Kwon Gu Yeon, Secretary General of Korea Scout Association. Old and former Scouts of Burma Scouting were invited to the historic celebration.
This year, the World Organization of the Scout Movement welcomed Myanmar Scout as its 164th member and declared it as the National Scout Organization of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Scouting in Myanmar was disbanded in 1964. Redevelopment started in 2012 after a visit of a small regional team of the Asia-Pacific in 2012.
