Sign Up for Adventure at Wonderland Azerbaijan 2015

The Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan is pleased to invite you to take part in “Wonderland Azerbaijan 2015”, an international camp that will be held in the Gadabay district of the Republic of Azerbaijan from 11 – 19 July 2015.

The first Wonderland camp was organized in 2013 in Sheki, Azerbaijan, with the financial support of the Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It later became an annual international Scout camp organized by the Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan.

In 2014, our camp in the South of Azerbaijan attracted more than 200 people, with representatives from the six Scout regions of WOSM. This year, we have decided to pitch our tents in Gadabay, western Azerbaijan – one of our most beautiful regions. The campsite is located close to Chobansygnakh village (40.740997, 45.745922).

The distance between Baku, the capital city, and Gadabay is 444 km. Gadabay is located in the median and high zones of the Small Caucasus Mountains. The highest mountains are Goshabulag (3,549 m), Gojadagh (3,317 m) and Garaarkhaj (3,063 m). The district has an arid climate with moderately hot summers and cold winters. Gadabay has a dense network of rivers and forests covering an area of 30,500 ha. It is rich in black and white marble and iron reserves and used to be a summer pasture for surrounding villages, and was called “The Hill of the Rising Sun”. As the district has numerous meadows, springs, mountains and forests, it has strong tourism potential.

When a copper mine was built here in the 19th century, the word “mine” became a geographical name in the language of the local population. Although Gadabay was granted district status in 1930, most of the older generation still refers to the settlement where mines and factories are located a “mine”. Gadabay remained out of sight both under the Tsarist and Soviet rule. Locals often say, “Out of mind, out of sight”, but unfortunately this factor also prevented the district’s development. Nevertheless, Gadabay is attractive and different from other places as it has remained pristine and pure.
