World Scouting Welcomes the Iraq Scout Association

The Republic of Iraq is a country in Western Asia. Its main ethnic groups are Arabs and Kurds. Others include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians and Kawliya. The capital and largest city is Baghdad.

Scouting was introduced to the Iraqi community in 1914 and was suspended in 1999. Iraq Scout Association is the only recognised and registered Scout Association within the Republic of Iraq and is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM).

The executive body of Iraq Scout Association is the Iraq Scout Council, which is established by virtue of a resolution issued by the Minister of Education. It has its legal personality and is financially and administratively independent.

The Iraqi Scouts numbered more than 25,000 in 2017. Its members comprise of male and female Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Senior Scout and Rovers.

Iraqi Scouts empower the spirit of national affiliation and leadership in the Iraqi local communities through the Scout programme, which is supported by the directorate of sport and school activities under the ministry of education and in cooperation with CBOs and NGOs.
