Turkish Scouts Support Earthquake Victims

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook Eastern Turkey on 24 January, at a depth of 15Km. Soon after the initial quake, the area was struck further by a series aftershock ranging from a magnitude of 5.4 to 3.3.

Dozens of buildings collapsed, and hundreds of citizens endured severe injuries. Some casualties have also been recorded.

Rescue teams warned residents against returning to damaged buildings due to the high risk of aftershocks.

Scouting and Guiding Federation of Turkey immediately dispatched relief teams who rushed to the province to offer support. In coordination with the Red Crescent rescue teams, the Scouts have been distributing food and warm drinks and providing some leisure activities to distract children from the tragedy. They have also supported the distribution of blankets and warm clothes as temperatures dropped to as low as -8C.

A more coordinated large-scale relief action will start from February 1st ,2020 and will continue for a period of 2 months. Thanks to the Messenger of Peace support, the Turkish Scouts plan to support 4000 residents per day in 4 locations across the Elazig province. About 240 Scout volunteers will be mobilized.

The planned actions include the set-up of service tents where hots drinks and snacks will be provided around the clock. The Scouts volunteers will also support the set-up of temporary housing structures for affected families till permanent alternative housing is provided.

Across the province, a number of children’s protected playgrounds will be set up. Scout leaders will offer leisure programmes to help children overcome the traumatic experience and distract them from the post-disaster setting.
