In the Clean up the World Report for 2009, World Scouting receives recognition for its support to Clean up the World (CUW). CUW works in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and in its Global Activity Report, launched to support World Environment Day on 5 June, WOSM is recognised as a key 'Ally'. Scout activities are highlighted in the report.

Activities ranged from cleaning up small villages to national clean up events. Across many regions, communities also implemented recycling programmes, energy conservation, tree planting and awareness raising activities.

Jointly with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Clean Up the World (CUW) and the World Organization of the Scout Movement will celebrate their third-year of Alliance. The CUW Campaign is a yearly event with a special focus on the CUW Weekend which will take place this year from September 17-21. This event gathers more than 35 millions volunteers from different parts of the globe to learn, explore and take action towards a better environment in their local area.

NSOs and local Scout groups are encouraged take part by registering and mapping their activities on the Cleanuptheworld.org, this years theme is “Communities caring for nature” and will focus on the environmental education activities, clean up actions, waste reduction and recycling projects.

Last year Scouts in over 22 countries took part in CUW activities. World Environment Day is on 5 June and Scouts could use this day to share ideas and make plans to take action to clean up their local area. More information is available in the attached flyer.

The International Biodiversity Year 2010 is initiated by the United Nations under the theme “Biodiversity is life”. This opportunity is given to the world to take action in 2010 to safeguard the variety of life on earth by making sure that natural habitats are protected.
