Pope Leo XIV plants an olive tree with Scouts from Algeria

Pope Leo XIV met with young people and volunteers from the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA) during an official state visit earlier this month to the coastal city of Annaba, where he planted an olive tree as a symbol of peace and unity.

The tree-planting event, held at the ancient archaeological site of Hippo, brought together young people and adult leaders from Islamic and Catholic communities. It offered a moment to reflect on the importance of interreligious dialogue, shared values, and service to others.

The Algerian Muslim Scouts have long played an active role in supporting their local communities. In recent years, they have led and participated in initiatives focused on youth empowerment and community development. Through programmes such as the Generation Unlimited Youth Challenge and the Change Makers Project, thousands of Algerian Scouts have taken part in forums, training, and activities promoting social entrepreneurship and community action. Hundreds more joined the Young Leaders project, supporting young people in developing leadership and practical skills.

"The Algerian Muslim Scouts serve as a leading educational school, working to instil the values of peace, love, and solidarity in our youth. We believe that building a better world begins with preparing a conscious generation that believes in human fraternity and the coexistence of different cultures and religions."
Amine Manasria
International Commissioner of the Algerian Muslim Scouts

Pope Leo XIV has also recognised the role of Scouting in promoting respect for the environment, noting that young people, through their connection with nature, are helping create more sustainable ways of living.
