Singapore’s Seniors-in-Scouting
One of the strategic moves of the Singapore Scout Association to bring Scouting further closer to community comes up with the Seniors-in-Scouting programme that enables them to reach out to seniors and retirees in the community.
Under the Seniors-in-Scouting (SIS) programme, senior members continue to play an active part in various programmes, giving them life-long learning and active ageing. One best example of this is Ukulele practices they held regularly led by Mr. Roney Tan, the Honorary Treasurer and assisted by Mr. Peter Chan, a Management Committee Member.
Aside from sharing their common interest, the Ukulele Team enjoys the privilege being invited by government and various civic organisations to perform in formal occasions. Aside from the Ukelele group, some 15 Seniors have been learning the art of line dancing, instructed by Margaret Anderson, one of the long-time dedicated and committed leaders of SSA. The senior dance group meet together every two weeks.
Among the members, Mr. & Mrs. Cheng Sai are the two of the very active SISs who are presently leading the Colugo Scout Group, an open group based at Thomson Community Centre who are both grateful that Scouting has no age limit and can be enjoyed by everyone.
Since it started in December 2006, SIS has grown from strength to strength that as of December 2010, 379 seniors had already been been trained.
