Scouts support cholera prevention efforts in Maiduguri, Nigeria.
In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Nigeria, Scouts are helping families protect themselves from cholera through community action response. Led by the Borno State Scout Council of The Scout Association of Nigeria, the response is supporting 11 high-risk communities with fumigation, disinfection, hygiene awareness, and basic hygiene materials.
Cholera remains a serious concern in parts of Maiduguri, where poor drainage, limited sanitation, unsafe waste disposal, and lack of access to clean water increase the risk of the disease spreading. To help address these risks, Scouts and response teams carried out fumigation and disinfection in homes, drainage channels, waste disposal sites, streets, public spaces, and community facilities. Their work helped improve cleanliness in shared spaces and reduce environmental risks linked to cholera and other communicable diseases.
Scouts also went door to door to speak with residents about simple steps they can take to protect themselves and their families. They shared messages on handwashing, safe drinking water, food hygiene, waste management, early reporting of symptoms, and the importance of seeking treatment early. To support families further, Scouts distributed hygiene materials, including soap, disinfectants, and handwashing items.
So far, the response has reached around 20,000 households across the 11 communities. Scouts remain committed to reaching more families at risk and supporting community-based public health action.
Across many countries in Africa , Scouts play an important role in humanitarian response, working alongside communities and supporting government efforts during times of need. This initiative is one example of how Scouting helps strengthen local action and protect public health.
This initiative was implemented by the Borno State Scout Council, under the Scout Association of Nigeria, with support from the Walwanne Foundation.
