Deaf Scouts showcase their Scouting skills

NAIROBI - They say, “disability is not inability”, and this was epitomized by a group of Kenyan Scouts during the recently ended Kenya National Super Inter-patrol Competitions. The event was held at the Rowallan Camp in Nairobi from 13th to 18th September 2010. The said competitions were like any other, except, some of the participants were deaf.

The Chipukizi Scouts (Junior Scouts) from Shajamandi School for the deaf, had two patrols, namely: Monkey Patrol for the girls and Giraffe Patrol for the boys who had well made facilities (Scout camp gadgets) and could recite the Scout Promise in sign language. They were commended for their hard work and skills, which in the end of the four-day competition earned them the award of the Most Organized Patrol as well as the Best Patrol Award.

The event that saw His Excellency Honorable Charles Mogotsi Mokozo, the High Commissioner of Botswana as a guest, had 46 teams drawn from all provinces in Kenya participate in different categories well as the sectional badge training for observers.

The Kenya Scouts Association will send four teams to represent them in the East Africa inter-patrol Competitions to be held in Rwanda this December.
