Eagle Scout flies high with Wings for Autism

Love knows no bounds, and it was precisely his love for his twin brother that inspired Blake Deaton to create an Eagle Scout service project to help students with special needs. His twin brother, Shane, is autistic and legally blind.

Blake began his ‘Wings for Autism’ project by asking Shane’s teacher what his classroom needed the most. They both decided that the school could really use a sensory room specially designed for young people with autism.

The Life Scout wasted no time and began sourcing for the special lighting, padded floors and educational toys for the sensory room and the USD10,000 fund that was needed. He sold t-shirts and held a one-day fundraiser where members of his community paid to ride in a plane.

Having his project featured in People magazine also helped tremendously. By the end of his fundraising campaign, Blake raised USD30,000 which allowed him to build not one, but two sensory rooms!
