3,000 American Scouts distinguish themselves in Normandy
Some 3,000 American Boy Scouts paraded on Omaha Beach on Saturday April 16th, forming the phrase, "Normandie, Land of Liberty". Omaha Beach is one the five landing beaches of Normandy. The goal of the operation was to provide support to have these beaches listed as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage.
Since 1994, the Boy Scouts of America organise a triennial rally in Normandy. The director of the “Normandie Mémoire” Association explained that the Scout organization proposed to provide its member Scouts to take part in a memorial workshop around the Allied Landing and the Battle of Normandy.
This year a dozen veterans who landed on the Normandy beaches in June 1944 also attended the rally.
These Scouts belong to American families who temporarily reside in Europe. Some of them came from Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, England, Turkey and France.
On that morning, they had picked 1,500 flowers from the fields of “Tulips against cancer”, situated between Bayeux and Caen. Following the flower picking, the Boy Scouts of America made a donation of 1,500 EUR for the benefit of the fight against this illness. The young Americans will decorate the gravestones of the Omaha cemetery with these tulips.
