First Scouts Go Solar Challenge implemented in Kenya

In the light of the climate change challenges the world is facing, there is an urgent need to rethink the use of solar energy as a top priority for the global community. With the support of WOSM Services, the Kenya Scout Association is the first National Scout Organization to bring the Earth Tribe’s Scouts Go Solar Challenge to a country which enjoys year-round sunshine, thus taking part in a global effort to contribute towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action).

Through a workshop which trained 20 active Scout members, Kenyan Scouts engaged a group of “solar innovators” ready to impact 15 communities nationwide and guide more than 500 Scouts towards better, cleaner and more sustainable usage of solar energy. Becoming a solar innovator is more than just a name, it is the result of a behavioural change towards the use of solar as as a renewable and more efficient source of energy.

Through various interactive activities, these dedicated Scouts improved awareness about the creative use of solar energy, and also inspired younger generations of Scouts to change their mindset and embrace environmental sustainability in their daily life - a task worthy of being true Earth Tribe environmental champions!

During the workshop “I learned that there is more we can do to save the environment using very few resources, all we need is good cooperation as a team. From little coordinated efforts comes great change,” said one of the Scouts participating in the Scouts Go Solar Challenge.

Scouts Go Solar, designed in collaboration with partners Solafrica, is one of three Earth Tribe Challenges meant to engage Scouts around the world to be part of a global community that is taking action for the environment and contributing towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
