Lord Baden-Powell Memorial High School: A new Scout school in Tanzania

Scouting is known for innovations. We have had indabas, jamborees, camporees and agoonorees. There is now a new trend of Scout schools and it will perhaps warrant some nomenclature from a special Scout task force. What would you call a Scout school? Perhaps an academoree! It is on the eve of the Founder’s Day and the Headmaster of the first Scout school in Tanzania, Mr Methusela Magoti, pays a visit to the Africa Regional Office in Nairobi. Under the green-leafy canopied Rowallan Scouts Camp, he relates the story of a trailblazing venture and breathtaking idea.

Located in Dar es Salaam, Lord Baden-Powell Memorial High School was founded in 2008, with an aim to promote Scouting as an educational method that can supplement the mainstream schooling system. The institution follows the normal Tanzanian educational curriculum. This is nonetheless boosted by a solid extracurricular programme that aims to inculcate ethical and leadership qualities. Some of the main extras include: a soccer academy that trains football professionals; music courses; painting; art; theatre and foreign languages.

The School looks to set up a computer lab soon although there is no electricity yet. The Director of this co-educational School is Col. Kipingu Iddi Omari.
