Young people lead conversations for change in Romania
On 25 September, nearly 40 young people from across Romania gathered for the National Dialogue event, a day of learning and exchange designed to empower youth to take an active role in shaping their communities. The event offered participants a platform to share ideas, reflect on key issues, and develop practical skills for social engagement.
The day was filled with interactive workshops designed to provide participants with practical tools and learning experiences that have a direct impact on their daily lives. In sessions focused on emotional intelligence, participants explored how emotions influence decisions and relationships, and learned ways to recognise and express their feelings clearly while responding empathetically to those around them. The active listening workshop built on this by helping participants understand the importance of being fully present in conversations, listening without judgment, and asking open-ended questions to create deeper connections and trust.
Peace education brought creativity to the forefront, as young people used LEGO® bricks to represent the world as it is, with its imperfections and challenges, and then to imagine an ideal version based on values such as solidarity, equity, and respect. The exercise inspired reflection on the distance between reality and aspiration, encouraging participants to think about what concrete actions they could take to help bridge that gap within their communities.
Another highlight was a workshop on conflict styles, where participants discovered their natural approaches to managing tension, whether by avoiding confrontation, seeking compromise, or asserting their views. These conversations led to a better understanding of the diversity of perspectives and the importance of constructive collaboration.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to group reflections and open discussions. Participants debated the role of community and the social factors that influence young people’s decisions today. From these conversations emerged a shared desire to contribute to a more equitable and engaged society. The energy of the day was marked by collaboration, creativity, and the confidence that young voices can shape a better future.
By the end of the event, participants were not only inspired but had also begun sketching practical ideas and solutions for the challenges facing their communities. Through initiatives like this, the Voices of Change project continues to empower young people across Europe to take the lead in building stronger, more united, and inclusive societies.
