Hi there, I'm a nonscientist but very interested in the science of human behavior; I just signed up for the GGSC email newsletter and then this came through. It is definitely interesting. I think there http://clichecollegeessays.pen.io/ is a lot of value in these kinds of studies based on aggregate data, quantifiable survey responses. One big value is it can help us figure out what kinds of techniques and behavioral phenomena are worthy of further study. For me an important next step is in figuring out how to constructively take a crack at questions like "what is happiness?" Or, "what is an open-minded perspective?" "What is kindness?" "What is community?" Now at least in my mind, this is very hard. I've thought of different angles we can take on it-- observational study would be one way. Do people consistently observe certain behaviors in others as kind or unkind? What about people observing the same relational event, do they have the same interpretation of motivations and intentions? Then the next step would be to try to analyze the factors that lead to the different interpretations that observers have. Basically my goal here is to develop different triangulation techniques. Approaches and methods of study that help us to screen out the noise and get to the core elements of human experience. In my view this kind of study does not address those questions. I'm curious if anyone here knows of studies that might do so more directly. Translate
