Are you taking great photos of your projects and activities?

Every Scout project, activity or story needs great photos that help communicate the impact of your project, show how much fun you were having or simply to show what was happening. Here are some tips to help you take great photos for your next Scouting adventure. If you need some inspiration on how to tell a good story, check out this page.

Here are five useful tips!

TIP #1 People: As much as possible, try to make sure that your photo features young people, individuals or groups, taking part in an activity. Avoid close-ups, e.g. just hands, as they do not help your viewers to understand what's going on.
TIP #2 Scouts identity: Take photos that show Scouts wearing scarfs, hats or their uniforms.
TIP #3 Spontaneous: This is not a photo shoot! Try to capture spontaneous and "live action" moments. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, let your photos tell the story of Scouts and their projects. Photos of Scouting should be natural and spontaneous.
TIP#4 Activities: Your photos should reflect Scouting: Exciting, involving and empowering.
TIP #5 Diversity: Scouting promotes diversity and inclusion. Take photos that show the diversity of cultures, gender and age of the Movement.

Aim for gender balance. Everybody can be in the picture, girls, boys, women and men.

We are a movement of young people, but intergenerational activities are part of our appearance.

Our young people are vibrant and full of energy! Let's share their passion with the world.

Scouts are active - whether it's in a Jamboree, conference room or in the great outdoors.

Common mistakes

When uploading a story on, try not to include photos that do not help to tell your story. Great photos can bring your story to life and inspire other Scouts!

What kind of project or activity are they participating in?

This is a nice garden but how is it related to Scouting?

Why have they gathered here? Was it for a project or event?

Posed shots do not tell a story, some context is needed.

Challenge time!

Scouts love challenges! Take this test and find out if you are taking great photos of your projects.
