During the first days of August 1963, some 14,000 Scouts from all over the world gathered in Greece for the 11th World Scout Jamboree. The celebration of Scouting ideals under the theme “Scout Higher and Wider” was hosted in one of the country's most historic and symbolic landmarks: The Valley of Marathon.

Exactly 50 years after the opening of the Jamboree, on Thursday August 1st 2013, the golden days of August 1963 revived through a dedicated online tribute available at the address: www.marathon1963.com. The website welcomes the visitor with "Welcome to 1963" and reminds that Jamborees are essentially a Greek concept. It saw the day in 1918, when Konstantinos Melas, Chief Commissioner of Scouts of Greece, conveyed to Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the idea of organising, on a regular basis, international scout camps, in a similar concept to the modern Olympic Games. The idea seduced Lord Baden-Powell and the 1st World Jamboree was hosted in London in 1920, at a venue bearing the -symbolic for Greece- name "Olympia".

The website, designed by the 2nd Scout Group of Patras, Greece, offers an unprecedented collection of facts, documents, photographs, audiovisual material and souvenirs from the Jamboree that went down in history as the "Marathon Jamboree". Of particular interest is the " Selected Highlights" section of the website, where important but widely unknown details about the Jamboree are presented.

In another section, entitled " I was there", participants of the Jamboree can share their personal memories on the website, while building a huge list of people who attended the event.

Enjoy your trip!
