Reykjavík Peace Camp

The Reykjavik Peace Camp took place on the 7th-12th of October and involved 50 scouts of the age of 16-25 years in a programme that aimed at providing a dialogue about peace and to promote inter-cultural understanding. The participants were divided into international patrols early on in the week, so that they would have to get to know people from other countries in depth and to use their own cultural experience to complete the tasks that the patrols had.  Six of the patrols were focused on developing the peace game; 5 patrols focusing on one of the five key game aspects (Inter-cultural understanding, Love and compassion, Non-violent communication, Conflict resolution and Inner peace) and one on designing the game board.  The fifth patrol was the Public Speaking group, which performed a happening at the Hirosima-Nagasagi exhibition at the Reykjavik University, had a performance at the opening ceremony of the Peace Þing and had two representatives in the panel discussions at the closing ceremony of the Peace Þing.  The sixth group documented the event on photos and video. The patrols were encouraged to be independant whilst working on their tasks, but were lead by group leaders or SEEDs volunteers.  In addition to the task work the participants had different activities; learning and talking about peace, exploring Reykjavik, watching the ignition of Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower and participating in an international evening. The programme was mostly facilitated by the hosts in a creative manner, but during patrol work the patrols were encouraged to be independant.  The facilitators designed and developed the sessions themselves but sought inspiration from Compass -a Manual on Human Rights Activities.  A lot of emphasis was made on team-building in the beginning and on encouraging the participants to mix with other nationalities.
