WSEP : Organic Garden by KLKM Universiti Malaysia Terangganu and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia Rovers with collaboration Department of Agriculture Malaysia and SK Kelibang

This project consist of more than 60 participants from UMT and UTHM Rovers (which are university students) with tertiary education background alongside with Scouts from Gerakan Pramuka from SMP Al-Azhar, Medan, Indonesia. that helped us to manage and archieve the project successfully. Based on our goals, expertise and knowledge we have, we seek and believe this project will lead to awareness and give a significant impact to a community and world.

Organic garden basically a science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants by following the essential principles of organic agriculture in soil building and conservation, pest management, and heirloom varitey preservation in a natural way. The project contained 5 aims which are conducted during the 5 days of exploring the island of Langkawi. The aims are Healthy Land and Healthy Air, Plant Exploration, Road Clean Up, Let’s Go Organic Talk and last but not least, “Better Tomorrow”. The location of the organic garden is at  SK Kelibang,Langkawi.

As for the 1st aim, Healthy Land and Healthy Air, we use anemometer to measure speed and quality of air in Langkawi state. These measurements were taken at different area that we came across during the journey. The 1st aim helped us to realize how significant the state of our air that we always breathe inside out and relatively how it will impact the surroundings. Secondly, Plant Exploration was one of the best part of the aims as we collected various type of plants that are native to the Langkawi Island. Interestingly, a lot of plants were found and were classified accordingly as we found one by one that intrigued our interests. Third aim, which is Road Clean Up is being done since the beginning of the expedition. Rubbish and debris are being collected each day to raise the awareness and keep our nature clean as possible. The collected debris and garbage will be weighted at the end of the day. The fourth aim,  Let’s Go Organic Talk, where we were given a talk by an officer from Langkawi Department of Agriculture. We were briefed about the goodness of organic gardening, organic products, uses and the benefit of organic fertilizer. The officer handed out a pamplet on how make organic fertilizer and how good it can be used for our own. Demonstration on application of organic fertilizer was be conducted too. Finally, the last aim was “Better Tomorrow”, in which we presented how to help people prepare to face natural disaster during the overnight stay at Langkawi. We need to identify different types of environmental hazard and natural disaster and how it occur and discuss how we could save the world for our future children for another centuries. All group of participants need to play out based on the scenario of the natural disaster. Various groups giving great preformances, which were really, really funny and it really made my day during the camp despite of the exhaustion.
