HELP GAZA TELETHON
This was one of the most impacting works done by Maldivian scouts in history of our scouting movement. Help Gaza Telethon, a 33-hour 30-minute fund raising drive organized by Maldivian media organizations to raise money for the Muslims suffering under Israeli aggression in Gaza, had started at 2:30 p.m that day.
Maldivian scout’s commissioner had with all confidence said that at every turn along this event Maldives scouts will be active and will work towards the success of the event. Hulhumale was a major check in point for fund boxes with over 58 fund boxes scattered around in stationery spots while a group of scouts were actively moving from one place to another escorting BML agents in collecting money alongside the Maldives Police Officers.
My unit which is patrol Riyaa was in charge of security at the 3 deposit boxes at Hulhumale Ferry terminal. The support that the Maldivian people showed is astounding. Little kids came and donated by the bottle loads. Adults dropping MVR500 notes like its nothing. I had never seen this side of Maldivians so I guess it was a learning experience.
Within the first nine hours an estimated MVR10.8 million had been raised. By noon on Saturday over MVR11 million was collected. When the telethon ended at 3am on Sunday, the steering committee estimated it had collected over MVR20 million. The Maldives National Defense Forces (MNDF) donated MVR1 million from soldier’s wages, while the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and President’s cabinet pledged MVR500,000 each to the fund. The President and The Vice President have also pledged to donate a month’s wages (MVR50,000 and MVR75,000, respectively). The state’s independent institutions have also donated MVR300,000 from wages. Maldives Scouts and Guides were seen actively and it is by no means arrogant when I say that I’m proud to have been part of such a lifesaving event.
