How I met the Scouting? Through my friends, because nearly all of them were or are active scouts, and then some way or another, I was involved in the activities ... little by little I started being part of Scouting.
One of the the things it has impressed me, had been the sense of fellowship within the Organiation. I has the opportunity to get to know the most human side of my friends, I been a witness of their commitment to leave the world in better conditions, and I wanted to contribute.
I found strength, because when I decided to join, it was in between a lot of confusion and setting involved with the activities, helped me raise my self-stem and confidence, to focus, and to fall in love with the things I like to do, I was able to design for the Scout group, I learned how to do screen printing, while we we did many artistic and cultural activities for the pack. I learned to organize better my time, to plan based on objectives, design activities, to work in a team, all those things that that you don´t lear in the University
I've always loved art. I do Graphic design, I've always liked to draw, and 3 years ago I started to paint. At that point of time , I felt like as if just design for others was going to be what wanted to fo in future... I started with a small shop of crafts, which was my little design studio and workshop. It was exciting, to have a small Corner in the city, the only one selling craft made products made in Bluefields. 7 months after opening the store, I got reacquainted with Greta, a friend from childhood who recently returned to Bluefields from studying architecture in Managua, she was also a scout in their high school days. When she returned she joined the herd as well and we worked together a few months, then the opportunity arose to participate in a youth meeting in El Salvador . We both went to the event (it was not from Scouting) and on the return trip we were so excited, and we started to share ideas. The idea emerged of creating the center of art and design, which has the same name as the small shop “Waiku”.
and then once back, during the same week we organize all... rented a venue, we contacted the artists, I already had the contact of some artisans, we bought with our savings a screen printing equipment and we here is how it all began
We already have a year and two months since we opened the art center and we've learned along the way.. we have grown together with Waiku, things have evolved, but we maintain the same objective of promoting the local art and culture.
In Waiku we are a team of 4 girls, of which 3 are scouts, the two partners and the girl from accounting
Be part of Scouting laid the foundations for us to be able to take action, gave me the confidence to fight for a cause and I´ve been able to be surrounded by people that have supported me throughout this process
