The World Organization of the Scout Movement has over 40 million young people as members in more than 220 countries and territories around the world.

Yes, we have young leaders that are trained in emergency preparedness. Yes, they have the leadership skills to assist disaster relief organisations, such as our friends at the Red Cross. Yes, they have hands and feet and strong backs and they are there to help when and where help is needed.

No, we are not a relief organisation and our young members should not be expected to be the first responders. However, we are there at the beginning of a humanitarian situation, and we never leave. We help rebuild communities, and integrate and support young people for the long term.

Our young leaders help organise Scout activities for the young people that find themselves in a temporary camp for disaster survivors, or in one of the hundreds of refugee camps facing families fleeing from areas of conflict.

This could be seen during the devastating earth quake that hit Ecuador and the previous devastation seen in places like the Philippines, Nepal and Haiti.

Our Scouts worked hard in these search and rescues operations. Lifting rubble to help find survivors. Unloading trucks filled with food and supplies. Assisting in building shelters. They also helped in collecting food and clothing.

Scouts could also be seen in the refugee camps in Lebanon, Sweden and right here in Turkey.

They organise Scout activities to help bring to young survivors a little bit of the life they left behind. These activities help deliver a values-based, non-formal educational programme that helps in meeting the immediate needs of their current, desperate situation and better prepare them for the longer term future that lies beyond the confines of their survivor or refugee camp.

Scouts are empowered by the values learned in their Scout Promise to lead.

Never, ever underestimate the determination of a young Scout leader to help in a time of crisis. Simply point them in the right direction and watch the magic happen.

I lost my focus on this important activity during İstanbul summit.and I wasn’t aware of we are having hosted our Secretary General of WOSM there. This discussion reminded me some important milestones on Scout Service tradition on all of my years in Scouting. In 1999 The North east of Turkey had a earthquake where we lost many lives and it was my home town too. Scouts all around organized all around Turkey in hours and they assisted on live saving activities and all emergency organization on site.
Same yer we had UNESCO WOSM organized Peace cruise
It is an ambitious and courageous project to organise a Peace Cruise in the eastern Mediterranean Basin, which has been racked by conflicts and tension for such a long time. Developed and organized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), it falls within the framework of continuing World Scouting's contribution to peace, which has been defined as a fundamental aim since Robert Baden-Powell started the Movement.
In August and September 1999, the Peace Cruise will bring together 96 young people from Mediterranean Basin countries for receiving training of mediators-cum-negotiators on board the Black Knight, a magnificent Polish three-masted saling ship.
Peace Events planned in eight Mediterranean ports will extend the scope of this operation, and involve thousands of young people in the cause of peace all along the way! Thanks not only to its political dimension, but also its intercultural and interpersonal aspects, the Peace Cruise connects with one of the priorities of the Scout Movement, which has always been committed to building a culture of peace.
The Peace Cruise is promoting better mutual understanding, international solidarity and universal fellowship, following in the footsteps of the major international gatherings such as World Jamborees organized by WOSM since 1920.
One of the events was planned for Istanbul, but Having the devastating earth quake disaster on 17th August changed our theme and We organized a workshop on World Youth and Scouts Action on Disasters an Olympic house in İstanbul
UNESCO has awarded WOSM its Peace Education Prize for the first time. WOSM holds Category A (general) consultative status with ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
Another great organization of serving people on crises on from Bosnia to Kosovo happen. Kırklareli province Scouts established a youth center in Gazi Osman Pasa guest site ( A 5 digit capacity refugee center) all those years they manned the youth center from start work and classification of hundreds of lorries of material coming to center . During national days national camps held there and scouts help to classification and activities with children
Now we have an organization to make our organization on such events.
One of the importand activity to prepare for disasters was a communication exercise where we lead the grand scale global communication during one of the recent JOTA JOTI activities
