The 7th African University on Youth and Development Opens in Nairobi

10 November 2015, Nairobi, Kenya: The 7th African University on Youth and Development kicked-off on 9th November at the Sportsview Hotel Kasarani in Nairobi Kenya. The week long event brings together over 100 young people form Africa and Europe for five different activities, under the theme “Youth.org Actors for Change.” These events include: the 11th Africa-Europe Training Course for Youth Organizations, Annual General Meeting of the Network of International Youth Organizations in Africa (NIYOA), NIYOA Training of Trainers Course on Global Education, 6th Training Course for Young Leaders of the African Diaspora Living in Europe and the Africa-Europe Youth Platform Meeting.

The university is organised by the North-South Centre in the framework of the Joint Management Agreement between the European Commission – EuropeAid Co-operation Office and the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe. It is the second time the university is being hosted in Kenya by NIYOA in partnership with the European Youth Forum, Pan-African Youth Forum and the African Diaspora Youth Network in Europe.

As part of North South Centre’s Youth Cooperation programme under the Africa-EU strategic partnership the objective is to provide training and capacity building for young people and youth organizations as well as to facilitate their participation in decision and policy making.

To ensure that the future Africa-EU partnership will include a stronger focus on youth and youth organizations, the youth of Africa and Europe, at the 3rd Africa-Europe Youth Leaders Summit held in Brussels, Belgium in 2014; called upon the heads of states and governments at the 4th Africa-EU Summit to build on success of the Africa-Europe Youth work and address the common youth challenges through establishment of an Africa-EU Youth Facility targeting joint actions on: leadership development, strengthened Africa-EU youth entrepreneurship and promotion of the role of youth for peace.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), which is a founding member of NIYOA is being represented in all the five events.

Mary Waweru, the Partnerships and Development Support Manager and Jacques Sandrizi, the Messengers of Peace Programme Manager are taking part in the Annual General Meeting of NIYOA. Mary will also be taking part in the Africa-Europe Youth Platform meeting;

Pamela Akplogan, the Chairperson of the Youth Advisors to the Africa Scout Committee; Grace Michuki, the immediate former Chairperson to the Africa Scout Youth Committee and Grace Wanja a Rover Scout from Kenya Scouts Association are taking part in the NIYOA Training of Trainers Course on Global Education;

Fred Ahimbisibwe, a youth advisor to the Africa Scout Committee is taking part in the 11th Africa-Europe Training Course for Youth Organizations;

Josephine Zana, a Scout from Germany is taking part in the 6th Training Course for Young Leaders of the African Diaspora living in Europe. Another Scout, Zablon Samba, from Kenya is also volunteering to support the local organizing team in running the event. There are also two other Scouts from Somalia and Madagascar at the university.

This university is a key external relations event for the Africa Scout Region which adds value to WOSM’s work by providing opportunities for youth engagement, strengthening educational methods through the non formal learning environment and pedagogical approaches it offers. The event also serves as an opportunity to strengthen Scouting’s profile and enhance the movement’s relations with partner organizations.
