Girls and boys belonging to the Guide and Scout Movement of La Plata - Argentina, got together on Saturday 3 November 2012 for a procession in their town to raise awareness about issues that are important for all inhabitants of this beautiful planet: nature conservation and protection. This project was designed for girls and boys of both Movements, to ensure that they were aware of the importance of caring for their environment and to allow young people to play an active role in achieving this mission. To achieve this goal, it was decided that, by means of a walk through the important parts of the city, young people could catch the attention of every passer-by, raising awareness on nature conservation and the protection of valuable resources of our planet Earth.

This initiative of municipal interest was promoted by the City Council of La Plata and received the support and endorsement of the local Municipality. The walk started off at La Piedra Fundamental at Plaza Moreno at 1.30 pm, and continued on the path along 53 Avenue and through El Paseo del Bosque, to gather at the entrance of the city Zoo of La Plata. At the Zoo entrance, all the participants of the march assembled together for a brief period of activities and events that were put together by the organisers.

Various organisations working on environment and nature conservation joined this initiative from Argentina Guides Association and Scouts of Argentina by putting up their exhibition stands at the city Zoo entrance. Visitors approached these stands to gain first hand knowledge on nature conservation issues from specialists working in this field. The central tent of the Argentinean Scouts and Guides welcomed all participants and visitors alike, where Scouting experiences and achievements in the area of nature conservation were showcased. Volunteers in the Scout tent also explained to visitors how the awareness walk had been planned and delivered.

The idea behind this walk activity was to take a first step towards educating the public about the importance of protecting nature and the various ways of achieving that. Also during the activity, participating Scouts and Guides helped build awareness on the initiatives by the municipality to contribute to this goal, such as through the separation of waste at source which is being implemented since 2009 and currently contributes to recycling about 9 tons of garbage daily.

Bruera, the Mayor of the city, spoke on the occasion to highlight the importance of making children and youth aware of the problem at hand with waste management of the city. He said, "every Friday for more than two years I have been going around city schools to talk to students about the importance of caring for the environment, starting with the separation of waste in their homes."

The walk ended at the Casa Ecológica in El Paseo del Bosque, the headquarters of the Environmental Agency of the Municipality, which is also the first public building of the city that only uses energy produced by wind and solar power.
