Situated in the Swiss Alps, Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) played host to the 2012 annual Management Meeting of the staff from the World Scout Bureau – Central Office and 6 Regional Offices. With a packed agenda focusing on key topics for World Scouting, the meeting brought together 60 staff members from 10-14 December, concluding with a farewell to the outgoing Secretary General of World Scouting, Luc Panissod.

The first day was dedicated to a meeting of the senior management of World Scouting. The six Regional Directors, two Executive Directors from Central Office, the Chief Operating Officer, the Secretary General and his designated successor discussed and prepared for the wider meeting. From the following day, other staff from around the world joined the senior executives, with some key volunteers and partners from within Scouting also attending for specific sessions.

Key topics discussed at this meeting were: Organisation and Location Review, including virtual working, global support, marketing and communications, financial management, global human resources, and information technology infrastructure; Risk Management; Planning; and Messengers of Peace. Presentations were followed by detailed discussions which helped to clarify matters as the World Scout Bureau moves into an important phase of reorganisation and management changes in the upcoming year. Also during the meeting, global teams of World Scout Bureau staff, particularly from Education and Strategy, Finance, and Marketing and Communications met in breakout groups to discuss specific matters. Some of the breakout groups also focused on training and capacity building. Representatives of the World Scout Foundation and the World Scout Shop were given opportunities to make presentations to share updates and progress.

Kandersteg International Scout Centre provided a perfect setting, giving a Scout ambience and touch to the management meeting. KISC is largely run by young Scout volunteers from around the world and provided high quality support to the meeting. For some, the snow filled picturesque surroundings brought warmth to the heart, while to others the very cold weather (compared to where they came from) meant that they spent lots of time indoors, networking and having informal meetings even during off-meeting hours.

On the last evening, a farewell dinner was organised to perfection by KISC. The evening’s get-together not only marked the end of the meeting, but was mainly organised to bid farewell to the outgoing Secretary General, Luc Panissod. Having served the World Scout Bureau Central Office for 30 years, Luc made a moving speech, sharing anecdotes and lessons from his long experience. Luc leaves the World Scout Bureau at the end of December 2012 and will be succeeded by Scott Teare from the United States of America.
