Step 1: Get to know Generation Earthshot

NASA Research shows that people are more creative when they are young. We need this creativity to repair our planet.

This challenge follows a simple 4-step process for honing your creative genius and using it to come up with new ideas to solve environmental problems. Be a part of Generation Earthshot: a generation of inventors, innovators and leaders who will help repair and protect our planet.

Share your ideas with us to receive a printable certificate from The Earthshot Prize. The best ideas will be shown on the Generation Earthshot website and on The Earthshot Prize social media channels.



Step 2: The Problem Stage    

Pick an Earthshot and watch the intro video Click on “CC” for subtitles in 7 languages.

As you watch, list all the problems you can see mentioned. There are a lot! How do you feel after watching the video? No one can solve these challenges independently, but by breaking them down into smaller pieces, we can see how to take action. Think about all the smaller problems that link to this Earthshot, and add them to your list.

Start with global problems:

What might the effects of this problem be on the world? How might people and communities around the world be affected? Can you remember any examples from the video? What do you think is causing this problem?

Then think about local problems in your community:

Is our community affected by this problem? Can you see this problem where we live? What does it look like? How does it affect your life? How does it make you feel? Are there issues in our community that link to this problem?

Now it’s time to choose one problem of these problems to take to The Ideas Stage. It should be something you feel passionate about, so you can come up with great ideas. You might want to pick one of the problems that affect your community because this will allow you to use personal experience to find solutions that no one else can.

Write out your Problem Statement using one-sentence answers.

  • What is the problem?
  • Where is the problem occurring?
  • Who is it affecting?
  • Why is it important to solve this problem



Step 3: The Ideas Stage 

This stage is all about coming up with big, bold ideas. You are going to use this activity to generate lots of ideas to solve your Problem Statement. There is no such thing as a bad idea at this stage - the bigger and weirder, the better! That’s how you can reach new places and new inventions.

Spend 5 minutes on each activity as write as many ideas as you can.

Imaginary worlds

Imagine if you were a superhero! What powers would you need to tackle your problem? What would you do if you could fly? Or become invisible? Or teleport?

Different perspectives

What if you were a car mechanic? Or a dancer? Or a teacher? Think about what skills and abilities those people have. How could you use your skills to solve the problem? Think beyond the obvious answers.

These can generate completely unexpected ideas! Your objects are a rock, some make-up, a pair of trainers and the Empire State building. Begin brainstorming ideas that could link the objects to your problem. E.g. a lipstick that can block air pollution from entering your mouth or a giant wind turbine on the Empire State Building?

Choose your solution

At the end of this process, you should have lots of ideas written down. Some of them will be realistic; some will be unexpected and even impossible! Pick your favourite idea and move on to the final stage.

When you have chosen, write out a Solution Summary: 

  • What is your solution? 
  • What effect will it have? 



Step 4. The Solution Stage 

Now it’s time to share your idea with the world! First, complete this Solution Summary.

It’s up to you to decide how you will share the ideas. You could create a performance, write a speech, draw a picture or build a model – it’s up to you! Here are some activities that you could try:

  • You are an inventor! Inventors solve problems by finding new ways to do things. They are designers and makers. Create a storyboard or draw a cartoon strip showing how exactly your solution will work in the real world. What happens before, during and after your invention is put into place?
  • You are an entrepreneur! Entrepreneurs spot good ideas and persuade others to support them to make them a reality.
  • You are business leaders! Write a speech or a presentation explaining why this solution is so important. You are a journalist! Journalists tell us what is happening in the world. You are sharer of the news! Imagine the year is 2030, and your solution has become a reality. Write a report for the national newspaper on the front page.
