As the world’s leading educational youth movement, Scouting’s non-formal education structure plays a key role in helping millions of young people in vulnerable communities build the necessary skills and resilience in times of crisis.

Building on our efforts of urgently responding to national and international emergencies, World Scouting has developed three new resources that support National Scout Organizations (NSOs) and Scout Leaders in their emergency preparedness, response and management. From identifying the disaster lifecycle to practical guidance on providing humanitarian assistance, these resources aim to strengthen Scouting’s capacity to become a key humanitarian actor.

National Scout Organizations can now access Capacity Building in Humanitarian Action to better understand the disaster lifecycle, Scouting in Humanitarian Settings Manual to learn how to best adapt the Scout programme and the Action Kit to introduce humanitarian action to young people.

The resources will help NSOs in their national strategies, policy development or to give their Scout Leaders practical ideas to assist young people in humanitarian settings and lead non-formal education and Scout activities in various humanitarian contexts.

These resources, among others, are available on the WOSM Services platform where NSOs can access helpful material including guidelines, toolkits, trainings, and request tailored support from a WOSM consultant. A training curriculum for trainers is also available, covering the contents of these resources, while providing more in-depth and practical information to best equip NSOs in their emergency planning and preparedness to disasters.

For the next triennium, WOSM staff and volunteers will continue their efforts to build the capacity of young people and NSOs in humanitarian action through training, global partnerships and advocacy and suppoting youth-led initiatives, to raise Scouting’s profile as a key humanitarian actor.

To learn more about these resources and explore further ideas, join the Humanitarian Action in Scouting webinar taking place on 30 June 2021 at 2:00 PM CEST.
