Invitation to the Opening Session of the World Scout Academy on 20 June 2020

Dear friends,


With signs of the lockdown being eased in some countries around the world, and with the pressing need to reflect on the new realities caused by COVID-19, I am pleased to inform you that the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) has designed a structured platform for the leadership of National Scout Organizations (NSOs) to come together during this time and discuss how we can advance the mission of Scouting under the new realities. Today I am writing to invite the leadership of NSOs to the Opening Session of the newly announced event: The World Scout Academy!  


What is the World Scout Academy?

The World Scout Academy is a new virtual event by WOSM that will be inaugurated on 20 June 2020 and spans over 8 weeks, offering opportunities for exchange and learnings for national Scout leaders. The event will:

  • feature a series of learning opportunities over a period of 8 weeks,
  • be targeted towards the audience of leadership of NSOs and subsequently expand to all Adults in Scouting with relevant learning opportunities,
  • equip participants with the relevant knowledge and skills to successfully lead their organizations and facilitate Scouting in the new societal realities after the COVID-19 pandemic.


Invitation to join the opening of the World Scout Academy

I am pleased to invite the leadership of your NSO to the Opening Session of the World Scout Academy. The Opening Session will be hosted online through Zoom Webinar on Saturday 20 June from 12h00 to 13h30 GMT and will be open for the leadership of NSOs through advance registration. While the webinar itself will be conducted in English, we will provide simultaneous interpretation in French, Spanish, Arabic and Russian.


The Opening Session of the World Scout Academy will have two specific objectives:

  1. To formally open the World Scouting Academy, providing an overview to leadership of NSOs the objectives of the event, the programme and how their NSO can engage.
  2. To provide a get-together moment for the leadership of NSOs to learn about the work of WOSM and NSOs over the past period, as well as what is planned for the months to come until the 42nd World Scout Conference convenes.


What to expect at the Opening Session?

The Opening Session will feature panel discussions with WOSM and NSO leadership, featuring some of the exciting examples of how WOSM and NSOs have adapted their work to the evolving worldwide health crisis. The different panels will also include an opportunity for questions & answers with participants, as well as other online engagement opportunities. More information and a schedule of speakers will become available in the lead-up to the Opening Session on


Who can participate in the Opening Session?

We would like to invite you to share this invitation at your earliest convenience with the leadership of your National Scout Organization/National Scout Association (NSO/NSA), and select up to 5 participants (Chief Commissioners, Chief Executives, International Commissioners, Programme Commissioners, Training Commissioners, etc.) who will attend on behalf of your NSO/NSA.


How can you attend the Opening Session?

Registration to attend the Opening Session needs to be done individually through; select the Opening Session and follow the steps provided. Participants will be required to identify themselves, including their role in their NSO/NSA. We will contact you for confirmation in case we note a name that does not match our records in the World Scouting Directory[i].
