As Italy enters its third quarantine week following the Covid-19 outbreak, feelings of discomfort, isolation and loneliness have taken a harsh toll on the elderly.

The Italian Scouts have joined efforts to do everything in their power to help the population at risk, especially old people.

In the city of Florence, a Scout unit kickstarted a free grocery home delivery service for the elderly.

Protected with a pair of gloves and a facemask, Scouts hop on their bikes carrying shopping bags to those who requested their service.

A switchboard has been established to collect requests. As the service becomes increasingly popular, the group is calling in more volunteers to meet the increasing requests.

Once arrived at their destination, the Scout drops the shopping bag at the doorstep of the elderly and keep a distance while striking a very quick conversation. Such a needed comforting chat that could alleviate the intensity of isolation endured by old people nowadays.

“The motto of the Scouts is 'Be ready'. We have been ready and prepared every time there has been an emergency in Italy: earthquakes, floods, calamities - we faced together the difficulties and protected and rebuild, but most importantly, always kept on the torch of solidarity” - says Gallicani, one of the oldest of the volunteer patrol.

Another admirable action is currently underway in the region of Reggio Emilia, where Scouts have been asked by a local hospital to monitor patients’ access to the facilities. Protected with gloves and facemasks, the Scouts offer hand sanitizers to incoming visitors, ask them a set of basic questions covered during their training, to check on their health condition before directing them to the primary triage area where nurses determine which patients need to be tested.

Alongside community action, the Italian Scouts are doing a great job to keep their Scouts connected online despite the harsh isolation. They are running frequent online meetings to lift each other’s spirits and keep Scouting going. Check out this video for some positivity!
