The final report for the first World Non-Formal Education Forum held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in December 2019 is now available online! The Forum played an instrumental role in bringing together over 300 participants from National Scout Organizations, international organisations, United Nations agencies, as well as youth-serving and youth-led organisations.

The report highlights the key activities and outcomes of the Forum which was co-organised by the World Organization of the Scout Movement, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth. The three-day event explored current and future trends in non-formal education on an international platform, which resulted in the Rio Declaration on Non-Formal Education.

The Rio Declaration is an ambitious action agenda seeking to advance non-formal education as a powerful vehicle for the development of children and youth, and their role as active global citizens. The Declaration is a consensus outcome based on the input of Forum participants, including the newly updated Big 6 Youth Organizations Joint Position on Non-Formal Education.

“Non-formal education is a prerequisite for meaningful engagement in modern society. We are witnessing the largest generation of youth the world has ever seen, and it is our responsibility to ensure that every young person has access to opportunities that allow them to thrive in this rapidly changing society,” said Ahmad Alhendawi, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

National Scout Organizations are encouraged to read and share the final report on the World Non-Formal Education Forum for activities and initiatives.
