Be strong and take courage
Dear brother and sister Scouts,
Late December last year, Malaysia experienced one of its worst floods in decades. Severe weather brought heavy rains, and floodwaters ravaged parts of the northern and southern regions as well as East Malaysia. Most severely affected were the east coast states of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu.
It really saddened me to read about the lives that were lost, and the hundreds of thousands who were displaced. Many families lost their homes, livelihoods and belongings; some even lost their loved ones. Lives were disrupted, schools were damaged and children could not go to school.
When news on this devastating disaster broke out, Scouts throughout Malaysia swiftly responded by organising donation drives, collecting and despatching items urgently needed by the victims as well as deploying troops to support logistic efforts. They truly lived up to the Scout Promise, serving their communities and their country in times of need.
To all who carry the burden of loss, I extend my deepest sympathy. Be strong and take courage, the worst is over. To all the Scouts who have served selflessly, I commend your efforts and I hope you will continue to provide assistance as the situation improves, and help the survivors put their lives back together again.
Yours in Scouting,
