Largest Scout organisation in the world celebrate National Scout Day, welcomes WOSM Secretary General

Thousands of Scouts from Gerakan Pramuka (Indonesian Scout Movement), including Indonesian President Joko Widodo, gathered in Cibubur Camp at the eastern sub-district of Jakarta to commemorate their annual National Scout Day on August 13.

Cub Scouts, Scouts, Rovers and Scout leaders who participated in the celebration came from different provinces across the country.

Commonly referred to as ‘Pramuka Day’ in Indonesia, the celebration commemorates the founding of the organisation in 1961. Scouting came to Indonesia (then called as the Dutch East Indies) in 1912 as a branch of the Netherlands Pathfinder Organization.

During the celebration, Indonesians also welcomed Ahmad Alhendawi, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). This was his first visit to Jakarta and Cibubur Camp since joining WOSM in 2017. His first visit to Indonesia was at the 9th APR Scout Leaders Summit in Bali last year.

Secretary General Alhendawi also took the opportunity to spend time with young people and hear their views and experiences about Scouting and its programmes.

Gerakan Pramuka is known for its massive success in engaging young people and Scout leaders in community services and community development projects -- mobilising Scouts and leaders to spearhead, help and aid in health and sanitation campaigns, environmental clean-ups, including rescue and relief efforts during disasters and calamities. It is currently the largest National Scout Organization in WOSM with 21.8 million members, commanding 70.88% of the total membership in Asia-Pacific, and 53.4% globally.

During the celebration, Alhendawi was presented with the “Satya Wira Utama”, the friendship award of Gerakan Pramuka given to individuals who have made significant contributions as a leader and plays an important role in advancing the cause of Scouting. The award was personally presented by Dr. Adhyaksa Dault, Chairman of the National Scout Council of Gerakan Pramuka. This was an opportunity for the Secretary General to interact with Scouts and leaders of the largest Scout organisation which aims to contribute to positive change in local communities.
