Ghana Scout Association holds 2nd National Youth Forum
The 2nd National Youth Forum of the Ghana Scout Association took place on Friday 25th March, 2018 at its headquarters in Accra. The theme for the youth forum was “Youth empowerment for the sustainability of scouting” and it sought to provide a platform where young people could raise concerns, deliberate on issues and seek solutions that affected them as young people in scouting.
The main objectives of the forum were to equip participants with knowledge and skills on the Sustainable Development Goals and prepare the participants to become better at fostering dialogue in their communities. It was also a platform for young people to engage in a democratic process to elect new youth advisors to represent them.
The forum was attended by 20 participants aged between 19 to 26 years from 5 regions in Ghana. It was organized and facilitated by the outgoing youth advisors which further demonstrated the leadership capabilities of outgoing youth advisors.
The forum was also attended by a representative from the Africa Scout Committee, Victor Atipaga who led a presentation on the Sustainable Development Goals and its role in the life of scouts. He spoke on the importance of SDG’S and how it is linked to the values of scouting , in terms of the missions and the promise. He also stressed on the importance of scouts looking to make positive impacts in their community. He engaged the participants in an interactive session for which scouts from each region selected one Sustainable Development Goal which was most relevant to their communities.
Abigail Edwin, a youth advisor for the West Africa Youth Advisors encouraged the scouts present to give their best and promote scouting in their communities.
Six youth advisors were elected to represent the youth for the next year. The following recommendations were proposed at the forum based on these critical areas:
Sustainable Development Goals
- Each region of Ghana that had scouts should adopt at least one of the seventeen SDG’s .
- Rover crews within the regions should engage their communities in simple and innovative community projects.
Regional Youth Forum
- Youth forums play an integral role in the development of the leadership of scouts and therefore should be replicated in all the regions that are part of the Ghana Scout Association which will serve as a link to the National Youth Forum.
- Conflicts are part of every organization, the forum recommends that the POR’s of Ghana Scout Association be applied in preventing and resolving conflicts.
The 2nd Youth Forum was a very successful one with the Ghana National Scout Council approving the budget and work plan for the forum for the following year. They also extended their support and demonstrations of working together with the youth advisors to further the course of the NSO and WOSM in general.
